If you're looking for softer, healthier hair, you might not have to look further than your kitchen. While there are many hair masks and conditioners in the market, if you look closely at the label, the main ingredient is typically water. Additionally, depending on the conditioner or mask you're looking at, you may find some natural ingredients, but you might also find a few chemicals mixed in as well.
Personally, I like to make my own hair masks because I'm picky with what I put on my hair. One of my favorite hair masks is an oil-based mask that I put on right before I want to wash my hair. Because it used a various oils, I don't recommend putting it on your hair after you shower because it will make your hair greasy.
This mask only uses three ingredients:
- Four tablespoons of coconut oil
- Five teaspoons of castor oil
- Half a lemon
First, take your four tablespoons of coconut oil and heat it up if it's solid. Once your coconut oil is liquid, add five teaspoons of castor oil and then take your half a lemon and squeeze the juice. Once all three ingredients are in a bowl mix them and then apply to your hair.
Before applying, make sure that the coconut oil isn't too hot. If so, wait a bit for it to cool down while ensuring it's still liquid. When you apply to your hair make sure to massage your scalp so it can absorb the nutrients. Additionally, do not let it get into your eyes since coconut oil will harden again. I also recommend applying this with gloves if you have small cuts or bruises on your hand since the lemon is acidic and may string a bit.
Once applied, leave it in your hair for 20 minutes and then wash your hair as you normally would. If you have oily hair, I'd skip conditioner as this mask pretty much serves the same purpose. I usually do this once a week and have seen a difference in my hair health.
